Effect of Purple Blotch Farm Management Practices on Onion Production in Uganda

Onion is one of the most important commercial vegetable crops grown intensively in world. Purple blotch found all growing regions destructive onion diseases. Detailed studies on disease's management practices had not been conducted Uganda. The objective this study was to establish effect purple disease production. Kabale, Kasese, and Mbale were identified as major onion-growing regions. Five farms/onion varieties/regions surveyed using a semi-structured questionnaire administered 52 farm owners who interviewed. results revealed majority small-scale peasant farmers with mean acreage 0.64-1.94, which varied significantly p=.000, Kasese highest. Eight varieties recorded: Bombay red, Hazera, Hybrid, Malbec, Red coach, creole, S-Zee Tanzania, creole Kabale registered highest number farms (40.3%), district (25.0%), production 6,329.9 kg/season, Namisindwa (21.1%) second. main source seed Agro input dealers. use artificial fertiliser (72.7%) lowest (50%), though it did vary p>.05 significantly.
